The Houston Independent School District is offering instrumental music students the opportunity to improve and enhance their musical skills at the Summer Academy for Scholarship in the Arts.
Students will work daily with outstanding HISD music educators. The academy will focus on improving technique to enhance the student’s level of performance.
Students will be taught in both large and small groups, getting both individual attention and experience in ensemble playing.
The Summer Academy will provide band and orchestra students the challenge of preparing a concert program of high quality music to be performed on the last day of the Academy. Piano students will perform a class recital on the last day.
Students who do not own their own instrument should check with their school music teacher for rental options.
Transportation to and from the Summer Academy will be the student’s responsibility.
To be eligible for the Summer Academy, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be enrolled in an HISD school, or be the child of an HISD employee, or live within the boundaries of HISD, and
- Have a minimum of one year’s experience with the instrument of choice, and
- Currently playing in school band, orchestra or piano class or receiving instruction, and
- Will have completed at least grade three and up to grade eight by the end of the 2009 - 2010 school year, and
- Have no more than one (1) grade P in conduct for the entire year.
- The most recent report card MUST accompany the application. Applications will not be processed without a report card.
Auditions:
Piano students will audition for group placement with a prepared piano solo and will sight-read. Band students will audition on the chromatic scale and sight-reading. Placement will be the decision of the instructors.
